How a session
works

Most of it is quiet work, with a short hello at the start
and a check-in at the end.

Hello Quiet work Check-in
  1. 01

    Say what you’ll work on

A sentence or two is enough, and the goal can be as small as filling in one form.

  2. 02

    Get on with your work

Microphones usually go on mute, and cameras stay on until the session ends.

  3. 03

    Say how it went

When the time is up, you each say how far you got and what’s left.

Worried it’ll
be awkward?

The hello takes under a minute, and it usually sounds like this.

10:00 · The session starts
You“Hi, I’m new here. I’m going to work on my personal statement.”
Your partner“Welcome! I’m finishing a presentation for work. Good luck with yours.”
  • You can stay quiet

After the hello, nobody expects you to talk until the check-in.

  • Keep the details vague

    Saying “some writing” is enough.

  • Bring a friend first

Send someone your booking link and do your first session together.

Questions

If yours isn’t here, ask us
on the contact page.

What is body doubling?

Working on your own task with another person there, even when you’re each doing something different. Cofocus brings it online, with a set time to start and finish, which is why it’s also called virtual coworking.

Does body doubling work online?

There’s little formal research on it yet, online or in person. People who use it say a set time and someone expecting them make it easier to start, and a person on camera keeps them from drifting off. Your free sessions are the easiest way to find out if it works for you.

Is Cofocus good for ADHD?

Body doubling is a common way for people with ADHD to start tasks and stay with them, and a Cofocus session is built for that: a set time, a short plan at the start, and someone there until the end. It isn’t a treatment and doesn’t replace one.

Is Cofocus free?

Yes, for 3 sessions a week, with no credit card needed. Paid plans let you book more.

Are sessions recorded?

No. Video and sound go from your device to your partner’s, encrypted the whole way, and none of it is stored. Members also agree not to screenshot or record a session.

Who will I be working with?

Another Cofocus member who has booked the same time. They might be studying, working, or catching up on something at home. You each work independently, and you don’t need to share an interest or an occupation.

Do I have to keep my camera on?

Yes. Camera on is strictly mandatory for the whole session, with your face in view. Sessions depend on seeing each other, and while your camera is off, you won’t see your partner’s video. Keeping it off for an extended time can lead to penalties.

Will my partner see my screen?

Your screen stays private unless you share it. You never have to show the work itself: a short description such as “I’m preparing for an exam” is enough.

What if I don’t finish what I planned?

Tell your partner how it went. You might finish, get partway through, or find that the task needs more thought. Nobody expects a finished result.

What if my partner doesn’t arrive?

A minute after the start, you can press Request rematch in the session to look for someone else.

Can I book with someone I know?

Yes. Send them your booking link so they can book a session with you, or book one of their times from their profile.

What do I need to join?

A computer or phone with a camera and microphone, a steady internet connection, and 50 minutes when you can stay for the whole session. The hello and the check-in are part of those 50 minutes, and the video call opens on Cofocus itself.
